"Herodias is one of the marvelous free classics available for download on your Kindle. It is a short tale, a fragment of what was probably intended to be a longer piece, rather than a novel, replete with Flaubert's cynicism but full of color, idiosyncrasy and antique biblical vibe.Herodias, scorned wife of Herod, rather than Salome, is the villainess of this piece, motivated by vengeful feelings toward John the Baptist for his fiery and humiliating public denunciation of her. Salome, barely more than a child, has been groomed by her mother to carry out a dramatic and mortal revenge.
As always with Flaubert, there are no admirable or "good" characters in the tale. At the climactic feast, the highly placed Roman guests are studies in gluttony, avarice, and political opportunism, while the Jewish elders and Pharisees are fanatical and turbulent. Brooding over all are the fearful and amoral Herod, who feels his grip on power and life slipping, and his scheming and vicious wife Herodias. A good read of an unfinished piece that doubtless would have been a classic.
I am having a wonderful time with my free classics on Kindle, fulfilling a lifelong promise to catch up on all the ones I haven't read in my retirement. I highly recommend the list of free classics which can be downloaded for a mere 99 cents; it has been lovingly compiled and saves you time. There is even a brief biography of all the authors at the end of each section.

Herodias Gustave Flaubert 9781490989945 Books Reviews
This free kindle Flaubert tale of Herod Antipas, the son of the famed Jewish king Herod, focuses on this tetrarch - a kind of ruler who the Romans placed over part of Judea, a ruler with some local power, but not as large as that of a king. Antipas had married the divorced wife of his brother, Herodias, and is now no longer attracted to her. She is described as being from the family of the Maccabees who ruled Judea until Antipas's father Herod stole the kingdom from him.
The story is filled with the politics of the time peopled by Pharisees, Sadducees, Essene, Samaritans, and Romans, each of which is described in unflattering ways.
The plot focuses on John the Baptist who Antipas respects but imprisons and Herodias's desire for revenge against her husband. Scholars knowledgeable about the period and about the various groups will shudder at the portrayals for they are not true to the facts as we know them.
I had recently seen the Met Opera's production of Richard Strauss' Salome so I thought I'd try someone else's take on the story hoping that it might broaden my understanding. This short novel didn't do that for me at all.
