"It's just not your time yet, Little Joe..."

Lifted by the hand of God to his personal heaven, Joe Laws didn't want to hear those words. He had just died. His body was broken and bleeding. Yet, he was having more fun than he'd ever had in life. But the words were firm, if gentle, and he was soon back in his body.

"Why am I alive?" he wondered. Joe shares his unique trip to heaven and what he learned from it. His amazing recovery is a medical miracle. Dr. Richard Miller, Chief of Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Trauma Unit, daringly innovated with titanium strips to save Joe's life.

Joe Laws is a fun-loving guy with a deeply ingrained work ethic, family values, and a raucous sense of humor. Joe's journeys between earth and heaven will comfort and inspire as he shares the certainty that we are all Held by the Hand of God.

It's refreshing to hear from someone who doesn't claim to be an expert or scholar in religious studies who is trying to manipulate you into their beliefs. This heartfelt, honest account of Joe's experience was easily read in a single sitting but parts you will want to read over again to really understand where he is coming from.
I would recommend this book to anyone dealing with a terminal illness or to anyone who has lost a loved one and is seeking help in dealing with their loss. I admire Joe for taking the "Leap of Faith" and putting his story into print. It's a very narrow path between sounding sane and crazy or in this case good and evil and he's managed to do just that.
Thanks for having the courage to put into words your experience and congratulations on your first book.

Held by the Hand of God Why am I Alive Joe Laws 9780989599214 Books Reviews

Joe earnestly describes everything he went though with his near death experience, from being in God's loving embrace, to his recovery from his horrific accident from falling off a roof. Joe agonizes over why he is a "heaven reject" until he comes to realizes that God had plans for him. God's plan for Joe is to help all of us to know what it will be like for us when we go home to heaven. His near death experience has changed his life and his outlook on mankind, to good and evil in all of us who walk on this earth. Joe's book will help change everyone's feelings by showing us precious life is and how God and our loved ones are waiting for us to join them. I highly recommend this book for someone who has lost a loved one. I am passing this book around to my family to help them cope my father's passing a few weeks ago. This book is helping me cope with my father's passing, knowing how God is loving my father and he has gone home to heaven. I know my father and other family members, who have passed, are waiting for the day when we will join them, so that we to can go home to heaven like them.
First of all, I'd like to say this is a good outing for a first book.

On July 17, 2011 a fall from a roof left Joe's body seemingly beyond repair considering the extent of his injuries
The left side of his body was completely crushed; his back, neck, collarbone, and eleven of his ribs were broken.
His lungs had collapsed and his heart had stopped.
And, as the doctors of Vanderbilt University Medical Center would soon learn, he was in complete hemorrhagic shock, meaning that he had essentially bled to death from a ruptured spleen.
As they tried frantically to save Joe's life, his family prayed fervently that God would spare him. The doctors had called Joe's family in to say their final goodbyes...

However, miraculously, Joe Laws survived, and lives to tell his story. He provides proof with several photos of his scans, injuries, and repairs made to his body.

If you are looking for a book to further describe Heaven though, this is not that book. Mr. Laws shares a unique perspective, a version of HIS Heaven with readers, stating that we each will have our own personal Heaven.

My only issues with it were the editing. The author desires and tries so hard to share love and encouragement with readers, that those words are repeated many times throughout the book. There is nothing wrong with that, per se, but I had to flip back to the previous chapter to make sure I wasn't re-reading parts of it again. It occurred that close together.

The editor decided to leave it the way it was, so Joe's voice would come through. We get Joe's voice strong, clear and loving, yet in my humble opinion, I believe the reader would gain more from it if it didn't seem to repeat itself so much. It's detracts from a beautiful recounting of one man's experience who medically died and came back with a message to share.
I let the story in this book rattle around in my head for a few days before writing a review. The writer in me may have been more critical of the way this story was told if I hadn't thought about it longer.

Joe Laws died in a simple, yet tragic fall. He went to heaven and spoke to God, saw his deceased loved ones, and had some heavenly experiences he shares in this story. Whether you believe him or not isn't important. He is very passionate in the retelling of his experience. It was almost like he was sitting in your living room telling you what happened, and repeating several times the things that were unreal and unexplainable. There is no doubt he completely believes his experience is real, and he wants to share his experience with others in the hopes that they may find comfort in dying, find comfort in knowing their loved ones are safely tucked in God's fold, and that there is nothing to fear from death. It's actually living that is fearful!

In the future, he might do well as a church Sunday school teacher, or youth leader, because he is so passionate about Gods presence in this world, and especially in the afterlife. Lost souls would find his enthusiasm inspiring.
I thought it was a good read, but felt he repeated him self on some things that didn't pertain to what happened in Heaven.
Other then that I found most of it interesting.
Save your money
It was ok. I thought it was a bit repetitive without getting much said. I think the focus was more on the author than the actual experience. I didn't not get a clear explanation of his experience. I am glad that it seemed to help him find God & bring more to his life but I kept expecting more. I did get that it was a miracle that he was alive after his fall, & I am sure since he is not a "writer" maybe it was harder for him to explain things. I hope he accomplished what he set out to do with this book & wish him the best.
